Going against the STEREOtype

I haven't blogged in a while simply because there is a severe lack of interesting things going on my in my life at the moment. Well a lack of things which a audience may find interesting, I personally think my copious amounts of sleep and movie watching are fascinating. But after a recent, thought provoking seminar which raised the topic, I realised that my current employment is a bit out of the ordinary...

I currently work in a TV and Hifi shop. It's a franchise that has a chain of stores and I have had the pleasure of working in 2 of them (because of my move to the land of Higher Education). But no matter what part of England I decide to lay my working hat, I always get the same reaction/comments;

"a female working in this shop?"
"it's to see a nice young woman working here"
"a Saturday GIRL?"

If I was ever having a gender crisis, a day at the office would definitely put me straight.

When I applied for the job back when I realised that money in large quantities can buy you great things, I didn't for once contemplate that my gender would become a frequent conversation starter. A year and a half later having two X chromosomes whilst possessing the knowledge to set up an AV system never ceases to amuse the general public.

Normally the comments don't bother me and secretly a little more attention never goes unappreciated but sometimes customers actions are just not necessarily. Being the part timer usually consists of being in charge of answering the phone. However nothing gets my goat more than when a customer simply refuses take my advice or even talk to me about their issues because I have a higher pitched voice on the phone than my colleagues. I'm sorry? I didn't realise having ovaries meant my factual knowledge about the products I sell is considered incorrect.

Yes I do realise the TV and Audio industry is probably always will be a man's game but I am yet to see reason why women can't join in. Regardless of this slightly pro women blog I have seemed to have tippity tapped out, I love my job and honestly mean that. I just wish that one day that the presence of a woman standing behind the counter, bi-wiring some speaker cable, does not necessarily have to be an anomaly.
