Down it, Fresher!

I'm pretty sure my insomnia will be the drive behind my blogging. When I say insomnia, I really mean my disorientated, student body clock.

University so far has been an interesting experience. In the mere 10 weeks of being there I have made a fort out of sheets, played copious amounts of Uno, stolen a 6 person table from another halls of residence and accompanied a flatmate to the hospital after swallowing a fifty pence piece. One night whilst sitting around the newly adopted table with my flat mates, I came to the conclusion that being a student is just like being a kid again but without your parents to stop you and tell you go to bed. Of course with the occasional piece of coursework dropped in the middle.

I often look back and smile at how different my view of university was before I went and what it is now. I know living an experience can be very different to its initial expectations but I think view on higher education is different because of the many different outcomes and walks of life. Before I went my thoughts were typical of a secondary school graduate gleefully clasping my A Level results. I presumed I'd make 100s of friends in freshers week, be very drunk the majority of time and be living off super noodles and coffee. Reality isn't a complete contrast it just wasn't what I expected..

I haven't made 100s of friend. I probably haven't even made 50 yet. But those who I have had the pleasure of meeting have all been excellent. My flatmates are gems and never fail to make me laugh and brighten my day. Having only known them for under 3 months as a I type this, it is now the norm to talk casually in stupid voices, nap together and cut up each others food. A bond not even a married couple would usually have.

I go out, occasionally. It's not the issue of money that gets me or the loud music. I do enjoy clubbing and going out but I have quickly discovered that best nights so far are the ones where you buy some cheap vodka and get drunk in your flat (with your flat mates). The events mentioned above stemmed from these nights. Apart from the den making.... that was spontaneous.

As for the food and my diet; my prediction has unfortunelty been met. Once you start doing your own washing up you quickly realise that cooking as a whole is just one gigantic effort. Fortunetly I have three 24 hour McDonalds within a half-mile radius of my flat.

I have friends who chose not go to univeristy and have started their journey into a career path and I am so impressed with them. It's amazing how much they have appeared to have matured and gained such independence (note how I say 'appeared'). Yet I am so glad to have futhured my knowledge and gone to univeristy. The amount I have experienced in such a short space of time gives me great confience in rest of my student life. Of course it will have its up and downs and the home sickness gremlin taps you on the back once in a while but it is the new people you meet, thanks to the univeristy experience, who can make you smile once again and send the gremlin on is way.
